Details of the rankings below:

  • S4E01 - Extradition: British Columbias
    • Cary Elwes! Great episode. Strong start to the season. So many good things about this episode.
    • But also - Cary Elwes looked a little ridiculous in his parachute suit, I have no idea why Shawn and Gus didn’t know that he was going to jump off the roof.
    • Also, why was he on the roof? He didn’t have to actually break in and take anything ever, why this one particular place?
    • But aside from that, it was a fantastic episode.
    • S tier

  • S4E02 - He Dead
    • Christine Baranski does an incredible job, hilarious and believably ridiculous (like all of her roles).
    • Could you cause a plane to crash if you mess with the altimeter?
      • Possibly - you'd have to be in Instrument Meterological Conditions, and the pilot would have to not check it on the ground.
      • A more insidious way to cause issues is if the airplane is pressurized (like the one in the episode) you could disconnect the static port from the altimeter and the airspeed indicator, which would then give correct readings on the ground and erroneous readings as the airplane climbed and the cabin pressure increased relative to the outside air pressure. But that's a bit complicated to explain in this show. So, in short, messing with the altimeter - very possible to cause a crash in IMC conditions. But not on a clear day.
    • Overall, though, this episode wasn't hitting like the previous.
    • B tier

  • S4E03 - High Noon-ish
    • Shawn riding a horse for 20 feet was very funny.
    • Not a bad episode (are there really any?), but not my favorite.
    • The stunt with the falling side of a building looked incredibly contrived.
    • Lot's of funny bits, but as a cohesive whole, it didn's seem as great as some of the others.
    • B tier

  • S4E04 - The Devil's in the Details... and the Upstairs Bedroom
    • I'm conflicted about this one. Really like Ray Wise, but not entirely convinced by the episode as a whole.
    • Shawn singing 1-3-5-8-8 for his little advertisement melody was cute. Nice addition of other voices at the end, gave it some real heft.
    • Shawn got out-psyched by the main antagonist for a minute there.
    • Could be A, but for my rewatch purposes, B tier

  • S4E05 - Shawn Gets the Yips
    • Good episode.
    • "What purpose do tassels serve on shoes Gus?" "I don't know." "Evil."
    • Gus: "Lassiter shot a dead guy? Shawn: "sounds about right"
    • Fun episode. A tier

  • S4E06 - Bollywood Homicide
    • Good. Mostly just goes along. On the border between B and A tier.
    • The spicy food eating scene is hilarious. The setup is as old as comedy itself, but James and Dulé adlibs (along with Rachel's straight face) made it incredibly funny. "Even the water is spicy" "Who does that!"
    • A tier

  • S4E07 - High Top Fade-Out
    • Jaleel White, Keenan Thompson were both very funny.
    • Whole episode had funnier moments than I remember.
    • “I’m nowhere near adept enough with the “B” to work it into a nod” had me rolling.
    • The missing harmony being the key to decryption was quite possibly the most ridiculous stretch to make the singing impactful.
    • 1/4 black. 'nuff said.
    • A tier

  • S4E08 - Let's Get Hairy
    • Like the truck touching competition. With Tom Wilson (Biff!) as the competition.
    • Stewart's description of Lassie was hilarious.
    • This one was a bit forgettable.
    • B tier

  • S4E09 - Shawn Takes a Shot in the Dark
    • Amazing episode.
    • I really appreciated the change in format, the drama, the real-time flashbacks.
    • The phone call between Shawn in captivity and Juliet was magic.
    • Great episode, S tier

  • S4E10 - You Can't Handle This Episode
    • Mysterious brother we have never heard about?
    • I can see the homage to "A few good men", but really just not a strong episode.
    • As a former service member, all I can say is that a lot of the things the Ewan does would have gotten him killed in the first 30 seconds, no more episode.
    • Really just seemed like a John Cena vehicle stuffed into a Psych format.
    • B tier (retroactively moved up from C tier due to S5E14)

  • S4E11 - Thrill Seekers and Hell-Raisers
    • Great episode.
    • Sarah Shahi is great in this episode.
    • So many funny setups in this one, and a good plot.
    • A+ tier - first one of the season.

  • S4E12 - A Very Juliet Episode
    • Another great episode.
    • Not a lot else to say (i.e., I forgot to take notes), I enjoyed watching this.
    • A tier

  • S4E13 - Death Is in the Air
    • Contagion type episode, not a lot of outright laugh out loud moments.
    • But the relationship with Juliet and Shawn almost took the next step at the end.
    • Fun watch.
    • B tier

  • S4E14 - Think Tank
    • Excellent episode. Presages Series 8 episode 1.
    • Very fun to watch.
    • A+ tier

  • S4E15 - The Head, the Tail, the Whole Damn Episode
    • Shark attack - Lassie gives in to his jealousy of Shawn and tries to out-psych the psychic.
    • Gains the moniker detective dipstick for his troubles.
    • Great episode.
    • A+ tier

  • S4E16 - Mr. Yin Presents...
    • Spectacular episode again, just like the last season's ender.
    • Sad to see Mary go in this episode.
    • Had to save Juliet and Abigail at the same time, both actors were really put into uncomfortable positions for those final shots.
    • Absolute S-tier.

....annnnndd season four done!

A note on my tier list levels - S tier is reserved for something special, something extraordinary. The default Psych episode tier is A. A better than average Psych episode is A+. Something that doesn't quite live up to the high standards of most Psych's is set to B or C tier. C tier will only show up if needed. And none of these tier lists have D or F grades, because I just couldn't do that to a Psych episode.
