Details of the rankings below:
- S8E01 - Lock, Stock, Some Smoking Barrels and Burton Guster's Goblet of Fire
- Great Episode. Absolute classic. One of my favorites.
- Love the Interpol interstitials
- Deirdre pronunciation
- "You're as daft as they say" "I'm dafter"
- "Do the job!"
- 'arry
- "Spotted Dick? Spotted Dick? 3 Spotted Dicks?" - within the first 5 mins.
- Did I mention it's a Despereaux episode? No? Well, as good as it is, it's better with Despereaux!
- Negatives: no Henry Spencer (meh), no Juliet (boo). Also, Shawn and Gus's "restraints" in the house are ridiculous.
- I love the fact that it ends with uncertainty about Despereaux, is he actually an Interpol agent named Royston Staley or international art thief Pierre Despereaux? Nobody knows.
- Psych is back! Great start to the season! I'd recommend this episode to anybody who has never seen Psych before.
- The Bloody Bucket.
- S Tier *
- S8E02 - S.E.I.Z.E. the Day
- This one was better than I remember. Classic Psych humor, but with a plot that drives forward and makes sense.
- Trout (Anthony Michael Hall) is a hilarious douchebag.
- Lassie is working hard on getting back in Trout's good graces - no change in chief is going to remove his ambition!
- The danger speech!
- Lassie has to go through his emotional journey and emerges stronger and yet more empathetic for it.
- A little bit of shaky cam (handheld) in this one. Not sure why. Seems to be a theme of the season.
- Nice Henry and Carlton moment at the end.
- A+ tier
- S8E03 - Remake A.K.A. Cloudy... With a Chance of Improvement
- Funny episode, but I found the original more charming. This just seemed a bit out of place. Not a bad episode, just didn't need to happen.
- Way too much shaky cam - why? It's not a POV thing. Lassie Jerky, it made sense, and it was balanced by professional cam showing the handheld. This episode, makes no sense.
- Good, but not great.
- A Tier
- S8E04 - Someone's Got a Woody
- About as good as remembered.
- So much Woody comedy, and Trout comedy.
- Shaky cam. Why? If it's from someone's POV, maybe. But it's from the same old angles. Who got this burr up their butt? It is entirely too distracting.
- Still, a good Psych episode with a lot of classic Psych moments (Gus eating the cheese meant for the hostages, Woody being Woody, etc...)
- A Tier (almost A+, but shaky cam for no reason made it really rough)
- S8E05 - COG Blocked
- I remembered this one quite fondly. But the rewatch made it less of a fond memory.
- The first few minutes were great.
- But later, it seemed like they were trying too hard for Psych jokes.
- Example: Gus kept saying "I've been murdered", as he identified with the dead guy who had the same life as him.
- and kept saying "I" when talking about the guy. I felt like an earlier Psych would have had Gus trying hard not to identify as the guy, and maybe once let it slip after Shawn points it out multiple times. Maybe this is just a risk they're taking - seems like they got a lot of "last season, let's do it" energy. Did not work for this one.
- A lot of the later jokes and experiences just seemed old and tired.
- The Blueberry has to die? Ok, maybe. But not like that. It needs to save the boys, not be an awkwardly thrown in a superfluous chase scene (which really has nothing to do with the plot!). It has been wrecked and rebuilt many times, and has the scars of some awesome Psych history on it. Not cool man, not cool!
- B Tier (Almost A, but my psych watching friend and I finished the episode feeling let down and not enthused. Not a great Psych)
- S8E06 - 1967: A Psych Odyssey
- I did not remember this one fondly, seemed a bit weird.
- Rewatch - ohh, this one is actually kind of fun!
- The fades into alternate characters in a time many years ago were interesting.
- Tim Omundson did an amazing job going from Lassie to the reporter. I really did believe these were two different people.
- Maggie Lawson - I didn't recognize her at first from the camera angle and lighting, but although she does fairly well, the accent slips in and out.
- Dulé as the singer in the band - he does well, but I think this episode spends too much time on him as the band leader (kind of like a talent show interlude)
- Kurt as the old head of police - nahhhh, he's still Woody!
- Corbin as the old coroner? Maybe. Seemed like he was trying too hard to be Woody.
- Despite the nit picks, if you are paying attention and not just watching for the laughs, this is a good, solid episode.
- Season 8 of Psych is all about taking risks, I guess. This one actually worked out quite well. It gave me a warm fuzzy while watching it, up until the end of course.
- Lassiter is now chief, but can't have Juliet as his head detective. Juliet can go to SF and work with Chief Vick, so she decides that's what is best for her and her career.
- Lots of setup for the finale of the season here.
- A+ tier
- S8E07 - Shawn and Gus Truck Things Up
- Remembered fondly. Rewatched uncomfortably.
- First - why are they trying to be Sean Penn in Mystic River? Gus calls it out, but... the scene is a father finding out his daughter is dead, in a serious and emotionally charge scene. Why? Just because Kevin Bacon is playing a detective named Sean? (check the linked clip).
- The writing staff had a lot of fun with the food truck names.
- It was a pretty classic Psych in the fact that it had lots of misdirects and fake suspects, but not classic because of some of the humor was a bit more adult oriented. I know, "stern bush" has been around, but that's not quite as over the line as all the ball humor. First watch me laughed, but on second viewing, just predictable and uncomfortable. Seems forced, like they were trying to be edgier?
- The "Gus can't do a 3 point turn" joke is a bit played out, but it's also part of the life with the Blueberry. In the food truck? Probably to be expected, but didn't need to be included. Just seemed stale and forced.
- At least Lassie cuts the bit short on the way to the hospital.
- B tier (almost A, but again, it was a very disappointing rewatch for us, and the humor just seemed oddly forced.)
- S8E08 - A Touch of Sweevil
- Remembered not too fondly, and it wasn't anything great.
- The other fake "seers" were just odd. Well, Tom Arnold just seemed incredibly unbelievable. Hazel I could get behind.
- Seems like they were just going through the motions.
- Even when Lassie asks them to turn it up to 11 (or 15, I don't really remember even though I watched it today!), they don't go that much overboard. Not more than usual, anyway. Maybe .5 more.
- B tier
- S8E09 - A Nightmare on State Street
- Weird. I tried to follow it an fell asleep. I tried again, and it was just odd. A risk that didn't pay off.
- C tier
- S8E10 - The Break-Up
- The return of fun Psych!
- So much fun to watch, even with the heavy news in the show.
- Love the real life flashback to DVD Shawn throughout the episode. And how it was really heavy in the beginning, and then makes an appearance in the end.
- So many funny moments that don't rely on catchphrases!
- Creepy Gus gets maced!
- Val Kilmer!
- The ending that leads to new beginnings - great stuff!
