Details of the rankings below:
- S7E01 - Santabarbaratown 2"
- Very fun start to the season.
- The causal fingerpoint to head and opening of the trap door!
- Lassie "This guy knows how to put together a rumpus room"
- Gun range - for kids!
- Chief Vick calling all of them out.
- Lassie "An anatomically correct trophy over my toilet"
- Soup Can Sam! and Satchel Gizmo with all the backstory.
- "I have one beard, Gus. One! What do you suggest I do!" - the first time I saw the shared beard, I fell over laughing. Well done guys.
- A+ tier (almost S tier with so much good, classic psych stuff).
- S7E02 - Juliet Takes a Luvvah
- Good episode, but also not one of the best ones.
- Funny to see jealous Shawn. And Gus being a good friend.
- Solid, but not spectacular.
- A tier
- S7E03 - Lassie Jerky
- What an episode! I even got the Blair Witch homage, one of the few horror type movies I saw in the theatre.
- And love the unsteady "handicam" viewpoint for most of the episode.
- This one had a high joke density, and they all landed! Serious laugh out loud moments. (yes, this comment is from last season as well. But so many funnies!)
- Gus eating everything in sight, including two of the tracker turkey legs. And sampling the meat that could have been Lassie!
- Great acting by Tim and Maggie as well.
- Supposedly, Tim was in a wetsuit for the water branch rescue, but it didn't help much as water got under it and he was immersed in glacier melt water (read: COOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLDDDDDDDDDD) for all of those river takes.
- Juliet really letting out her inner badass take charge and take names persona.
- Kate Rogal - amazing. In every sense of the word, great guest actor, very camera freindly.
- I recognize that cabin! (from One, Maybe Two, Ways Out, and possibly other episodes).
- The only negative is that the axe in the back of Ed Dixon was clearly fake, you can see the supporting piece under his shirt moving around. Maybe it was just supposed to be ridiculous. When Shawn pats his back and the axe bounces back and forth - funny. Just not sure it was intentional.
- Great humor and jokes, but also great drama action. Really outstanding.
- S tier
- S7E04 - No Country for Two Old Men
- Jeffrey Taombor as LLoyd - <chef's kiss>. I know, I've used that one before, but it's fitting.
- Enjoy Henry and Lloyd dynamic, and Gus, Rachel, and Maximus. Other character development and adventures!
- Gus' extremely quick timeline on fatherhood. "Ohh, how quickly they grow up". "You've only known him for 3 hours!"
- Lots of twists and turns in the plot, very fun episode.
- A+ tier (UPDTE: moved down to A+ from S after taking a minute to think about it).
- S7E05 - 100 Clues
- Probably my most re-watched episode of Psych. Always makes me feel good, made all the much better when watching with my favorite watching partner.
- Another great homage, this time to Clue with Martin Mull, Leslie Ann Warren, and Christopher Lloyd from the original cast!
- Steve Valentine kills it as Billy Lips.
- Everything from the pineapple screaming doorbell, to Clizby (Clitthhby), to Curt Smith, and everything else, just perfection.
- Note from the fandom site: Like Clue, three endings were filmed revealing three different killers, and were voted on by viewers while the episode aired, with the first place winner airing on the East Coast, the second place on the West Coast, and the third, unaired ending included on the DVD box set. The Butler Did It scenario is the official ending to the episode.
- S tier
- S7E06 - Cirque du Soul
- Solid episode, a lot of the funnies are from Woody:
- "As anyone good at foreplay can tell you, electricity leaves a mark. I know, TMI. Tell Me more Information"
- "I can't read alive women anymore"
- The kid, Shawn, and Gus heads popping around the door frame - classic!
- Touching moment - Jules asks Lassie "How long will you be needing this arrangement" - Lassie's face drops as he faces the fact that trying to live with his fiancée in Jules' house is actually a big imposition, and causing his friend and partner a lot of stress and trouble. The realization hits, he accepts it, and says "It's ok we'll figure something else out". Then Jules (Maggie) flashes Tim a heart! That had to be an improv from Maggie to Tim. Lovely.
- Nothing really wrong with this episode, nothing particularly spectacular, but solid.
- A tier
- S7E07 - Deez Nups
- A highly rated episode on TMDB, was talked about fondly at the Psycon. Boy! Was it disappointing.
- Even when watching with my favorite watching partner, it still just flailed.
- It was trying too hard to be funny. It's like they were trying to get to a Hangover / Last Night Gus wake up scenario, but then thought "what if we don't have the day-after scene as the setup, and just focus on the zany leading up to it." It just felt forced and the jokes didn't land, and quite a few of the guest stars were really annoying.
- I would rate this as a rare "C" episode, except for the fact that the closer section, where Jules finds a ticket receipt in Shawn's jacket and begins to question everything. And the serious convo between them, setting up the next episode. Really great. Felt like it was a whole different episode. I teared up again.
- It almost felt like they were trying to be so extra in the first, main, part of the episode specifically so they could contrast with the closing 5 or 10 minutes. Give it the room it needed, get "the funny" out of the way first. Pure speculation, but it whatever they were trying to do, it wasn't successful.
- B tier (and only because of the last 5-10 minutes. The rest was C at best).
- S7E08 - Right Turn or Left for Dead
- Sliding Doors homage. Great execution of a good movie.
- Detail:
- In version 1, Woody says: "Don't mix vodka, gin, tequila, and rum"
- In version 2, Woody says: "Don't vodka, tequila, and rum" - Lassie calls this one a Long Island Ice Tea, but in fact, version 1 is all of the boozes needed.
- Gus' alergic reaction to the gold flakes in the biscotti is hilarious.
- Lassie with his new dog is also hilarious.
- A more serious episode, but very well executed.
- The Swedish talking in the bar was funny. Of course Gus plays fantasy floorball.
- Shawn's reaction to Akavit hilarious, goes into Irish accent. The whole bar scene was hillarious.
- SBCC! Mentioned in an episode finally!
- Lassie's phone rings: "It's the wifey." Lassie to the wifey on the phone: "Hello Misses America..."
- Henry putting on his invisible kid gloves. "Did you consider going Costanza?"
- The almost getting run over by a truck in the road was a bit much.
- I like how the two different paths merged back into his brain. I too sometimes think / dream of ways things could have been had I done something better, and have to snap back to the depressing reality.
- Never thought a knife fight could be funny, but yet, Shawn and Gus play it well.
- Juliet's forgiveness monologue. Tearing up again.
- And then Juliet's real monologue. Really well done episode.
- S tier
- S7E09 - Juliet Wears the Pantsuit
- Shawn's "I can't feel anything in the armpit" thing was very funny.
- Shawn moves in with Woody! That was never going to go well.
- I was wondering how they were going to handle it, but they did well keeping the serious nature of the breakup (Shđź’”ules if you will), but a lot of funny bits kept the show moving forward.
- Woody's Snofer - buisness of the left, party on the right. It's like a footwear mullet.
- Shawn: "You're safe now ladies." Gus: biggest tsk tongue click ever.
- Shawn measuring the window with his hands and then trying to fit the tiny piece of glass. Pure physical comedy.
- Juliet gave shawn advice, and Shawn said a sincere "duly noted". Probably the first and last time that phrase has ever seemed sincere, and not just used to acknowledge and then forget someone else's point.
- A slight bit of hope at the end
- A+ tier - not S tier for sure, but better than A tier.
- S7E10 - Santa Barbarian Candidate
- Fargo!
- Chunnel to Catalina!
- "You're available to suck it!"
- Ohh wait, that thing about duly noted in the previous episode - Shawn learned nothing! He's with all the other "duly noted" users.
- Gus "I could have made it all the way to the White House" west wing reference!
- Gus is an excellent sales guy to Shawn's stupid theories!
- "I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in Santa Barbara who's going to vote for you" - "Perfect! Means I've got the black vote" - Santa Barbara does feel like that sometimes.
- Shawn: "I'm not glib. What's glib?" Gus: "You."
- Shawn saying he won't tell the chief... that seemed like an easy way to mend everything. I get that he doesn't want to give up his dream job, but no sacrifice for Jules?
- "My administration will be all about transparency, hot dog wieners of unusual lengths, and gladiatorial justice"
- Red Robin and American duos reference.
- Jules burst in to the chiefs office. Teary eyed again. Chief knows, of course. And now Jules' speech to Shawn.
- A+ tier - fast paced, lots of ridiculousness, and Shules is sort of on the way back.
- S7E11 - Office Space
- Gus' retelling at the top is hilarious.
- Shawn bloody nose and sneeze. Just impeccable comedy.
- Both going to Henry, what an opening.
- Gus acting "ohh no, ohh noooo." So over the top!
- Leslie Vallery Sally - David Koechner does great protraying this guy. Also from Anchorman, and of course, The Office.
- Lot of references to Glengary Glen Ross.
- Mission impossible style music.
- Shules being back was just a one night thing, ok. Jules is still peeved with Shawn's antics and inability to learn. So a bit more of a road needs to be travelled, I suppose.
- S tier (UPDATE: moved to S tier, just a classic opening, and good episode)
- S7E12 - Dead Air
- So Shules is back on full force? Seemed a bit quick after the major rift it had been a few episodes ago. I guess they didn't want to overplay it.
- Crock Daniels show - first and last time we hear about this show. Seems a bit weird that all of a sudden, the boys seem to have been into it forever. I get they need to introduce the show, but there were other ways to go.
- Playa named Gus - funny radio show that has absolutely no substance haha.
- Glad that the villian was actually a real villian and not just someone "off their meds". It was a little bit annoying to see the person who was the target of an actual villian get disbelieved and automatically suspected as soon as her meds were shown. But at least in the end she turned out to be telling the truth, and not a person with dissociative identity disorder switching to a new identity to commit the crimes. Which is pretty much the only thing that happens on TV with characters who are on meds, and would have been too cliché. So good for them for not entirely going down that road.
- Overall, pretty good. I think it leaned into the no-content radio show a bit much, took a lot of time to get where it was going.
- Loved the unconscious fist bump at the end.
- A tier.
- S7E13 - Nip and Suck It
- Not a lot of notes for this one. Good guest stars, as usual.
- Pretty funny!
- A tier
- S7E14 - No Trout About It
- I always enjoy when they have the middle or end of a scene first, and then spend some time trying to describe / recount what lead up to it. Well done on this one.
- Anthony Michael Hall is brilliant as Trout. Note - I had no idea that was Anthony Michael Hall until it was brought up in Psycon. No idea! Really well acted.
- Nice twists and turns in this one. Good close to the season, leaving some uncertainty for next season. And Trout singing the "Suck it!" song back at Gus was perfect.
- A+ tier
- Psych: The Musical
- A slight cop out, but I kind of fell asleep watching this. Good songs, good performances, it just seems like it's going to take a lot of effort to get through it again. Maybe another time.
A note on my tier list levels - S tier is reserved for something special, something extraordinary. The default Psych episode tier is A. A better than average Psych episode is A+. Something that doesn't quite live up to the high standards of most Psych's is set to B or C tier. C tier will only show up if needed. And none of these tier lists have D or F grades, because I just couldn't do that to a Psych episode.
